Our Story
Founded in 1945, the National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi (NOHIL) in Lagos stands as Nigeria's foremost centre for orthopaedic and trauma care. From its humble colonial-era beginnings, NOHIL has grown into a world-class teaching hospital that has restored mobility and dignity to millions of Nigerians.
For 80 years, the hospital has been a beacon of hope — training generations of orthopaedic surgeons, pioneering surgical innovation, and delivering compassionate care rooted in the motto: "Serving, Caring and Restoring."
As NOHIL marks this golden milestone, it celebrates not just a birthday, but a living legacy of excellence in healthcare across West Africa and beyond.
By the Numbers
Through the Decades
Established as the first dedicated orthopaedic hospital in Nigeria, setting the foundation for specialised musculoskeletal care in West Africa.
Post-independence era — NOHIL expands its surgical capacity and begins training homegrown Nigerian orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists.
Responds to the critical trauma surge from Nigeria's construction boom, establishing NOHIL as the nation's premier trauma and road-accident care centre.
Modernisation of theatres, introduction of arthroscopic surgery, and affiliation with the University of Lagos elevate NOHIL to a full teaching hospital.
Digital radiology, prosthetics & orthotics advancement, and a renewed commitment to accessible, world-standard orthopaedic healthcare for all Nigerians.
NOHIL proudly marks its 80th Anniversary — celebrating eight decades of healing, serving and restoring hope.
